God faithfully guides us through grief, change, and every season of life

Karen Dodson — Learning to Trust God

Karen Dodson shares how God guided her through grief, surrender, Christian community, and faithful service.

I grew up at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church after my family moved to Pleasant Grove when I was 7 years old.

Most of you know that I’m adopted. For those who do not, my mother died in a car accident when I was 2 years old. After her death, my aunt and uncle adopted me and raised me in a Christian home.

For years I was taught in Sunday School and MYF, and I believed I knew the Savior. But on the night of July 4, 1974, my cousin and best friend, Carol Ann, was in a terrible car accident. She suffered a severe brain injury and remained in a coma for four months.

As I watched everything unfold, I could see history repeating itself. It became clear to me that I had a choice to make. I could continue down the road I was on, or I could fully surrender to God’s will and plan for my life.

I prayed for Carol Ann to live. Little did I know that she would survive, but the person we had known before the accident — along with many of our shared memories — was gone. She had to learn to walk, talk, and do everyday things all over again. The accident left her with severe memory problems and childlike behavior.

I cried a lot that summer.

That August, God brought Barry into my life, and we were married the following June. I later taught the 9th grade Sunday School class for two years. After that, I felt God calling me to teach Children’s Church, which I did for eleven years.

I also became an active member of the United Methodist Women.

When I look back over my life, I can clearly see God’s hand guiding me. He placed Christian parents in my life to raise me. When I was stumbling, He provided faithful Sunday School teachers, ministers, a loving church family, and a young Christian man who became my husband.

Through every difficult season, God continued to provide exactly what I needed.

Looking back, I can see that God was faithfully guiding me even in the hardest moments of life.

God is not finished with me yet. He knows what I need even when I do not.

Reflection

Karen’s testimony reminds us that God often works through people — family members, teachers, church friends, pastors, and faithful communities — to guide us through grief, fear, and uncertainty.

Her story reflects:
  • adoption and belonging
  • surrendering to God during difficult seasons
  • Christian encouragement and discipleship
  • faithful service through the church
  • trusting God one step at a time
Even during painful moments, God continued to provide hope, direction, and people who helped carry her through.

What a Friend We Have in Jesus

Throughout Karen’s story, we see the comfort of prayer, the support of Christian community, and the faithfulness of God during difficult seasons. What a Friend We Have in Jesus reminds us that we never carry our burdens alone. In every sorrow, fear, and uncertainty, we are invited to bring everything to God in prayer.

Reflective Questions

  • Has there been a difficult season in your life where you later recognized God’s guidance?
  • Who are the people God has used to encourage and strengthen your faith?
  • What does it mean to fully surrender your plans and fears to God?
  • How can your story encourage someone else today?

    Scripture Reflection

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.”
    — Proverbs 3:5–6 (NASB)

Karen’s story reminds us that even when life feels uncertain, God continues to guide, provide, and remain faithful through every season.
