Spiritual Gifts

Discovering How God Has Equipped You to Serve

Church members use a variety of spiritual gifts while serving together in ministry and outreach. Just as the body has many parts with different functions, God equips believers with different gifts to build up the church, serve others, and share the love of Christ. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, every gift has a purpose and every person has a place in God's work.

Every Gift Matters
God equips every believer with unique gifts to serve, encourage, lead, teach, care, and share His love. When we use our gifts together, the church becomes stronger and the community is blessed.

Every believer has been gifted by God for ministry, encouragement, service, and spiritual growth.

The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts so the church can grow, people can be strengthened, needs can be met, and Christ can be glorified.

At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, we believe every person has a place in the body of Christ. Some gifts are visible. Others happen quietly behind the scenes. Every gift matters.

Whether God has gifted you to teach, encourage, organize, pray, lead, serve, show mercy, welcome others, create, give, or care for people, your gifts can help others experience the love of Christ.

As neighbors become family, we grow stronger when each person uses their gifts to serve God and others.

This page connects with our sermon themes such as Start a Fire, reminding us that the Holy Spirit not only changes hearts but also empowers believers for ministry and service.

Discovering How God Has Equipped You to Love, Serve, and Lead

Every believer has been uniquely created and called by God.

When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit begins transforming our lives and equipping us for ministry. God does not call people to sit on the sidelines. He calls us to participate in His work by using the gifts He has given us.

Some gifts are easy to recognize. Others develop over time through prayer, study, service, and experience. Some gifts are visible in front of a congregation. Others quietly bless people behind the scenes. Every gift matters because every person matters.

At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, we believe God calls each of us to Love Boldly, Serve Joyfully, and Lead Courageously. Spiritual gifts help us live out that calling as disciples of Jesus Christ.

What Are Spiritual Gifts?

Spiritual gifts are special abilities given by the Holy Spirit to believers for the purpose of serving God, building up the church, and helping others grow in faith.

They are not given for personal recognition or status. They are given so that God’s people can work together as one body with many different roles.

Spiritual gifts often work alongside our personality, experiences, passions, talents, and opportunities. As we grow in Christ, God uses all of these things together to help us serve effectively.

The purpose of spiritual gifts is not simply to discover what we are good at. The purpose is to discover how God wants to use us.

The Holy Spirit and Spiritual Gifts

The Holy Spirit empowers believers for Christian living and ministry.

On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon the followers of Jesus and empowered them to share the gospel and build the Church. That same Spirit continues to work in believers today.

The Holy Spirit guides, teaches, encourages, convicts, strengthens, and equips God’s people for service.

Spiritual gifts are one of the ways God works through ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things.

Every Gift Matters

In 1 Corinthians 12, the Apostle Paul compares the church to a human body.

A body needs many different parts working together. The eye cannot do the work of the hand. The hand cannot do the work of the foot. Every part has value.

The same is true in the church.

Some people teach.

Some encourage.

Some organize.

Some serve.

Some lead.

Some pray.

Some show mercy.

Some welcome guests.

Some care for people during difficult seasons.

Some work behind the scenes.

All are important.

God did not design the church for a few people to do everything. He designed the church so that every believer could contribute to the mission.

Common Spiritual Gifts

Scripture identifies many different spiritual gifts. While lists vary across several passages, some commonly recognized gifts include:

Teaching

Administration

Leadership

Service

Mercy

Hospitality

Encouragement

Giving

Evangelism

Faith

Wisdom

Discernment

Shepherding

Prayer

Helping

No one receives every gift, and no gift is more important than another. God distributes gifts according to His purposes and the needs of the church.

Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts

Many Christians wonder, “What are my spiritual gifts?”

Discovering your gifts is often a journey rather than a single moment.

Prayer helps us listen for God’s direction.

Bible study helps us understand how God works through His people.

Serving helps us discover where God uses us most effectively.

Other believers often recognize gifts in us before we recognize them ourselves.

Spiritual gifts assessments can also provide helpful insight into areas where God may have equipped us for ministry.

As you serve, learn, and grow, patterns often emerge that reveal how God has uniquely gifted you.

Spiritual Gifts Assessment

One helpful tool for discovering spiritual gifts is a Spiritual Gifts Assessment.

These assessments ask questions about your interests, experiences, strengths, and ministry preferences. The results can help identify gifts that may already be active in your life.

An assessment is not meant to define you. Instead, it serves as a starting point for prayer, reflection, and conversation.

Many Christians discover that their strongest gifts become clearer as they actively serve and receive encouragement from others.

We have many areas where you can use your gift

Spiritual gifts are not meant to remain on paper. They are meant to be used.

At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, spiritual gifts are expressed through many ministries and opportunities to serve.

Teaching gifts help lead Bible studies, Sunday School classes, and discipleship groups.

Administration gifts help organize ministries, events, and church leadership.

Mercy gifts help care for those experiencing illness, grief, and difficult seasons.

Service gifts support ministries such as Making Mats for the Homeless, community outreach projects, and mission efforts.

Hospitality gifts help visitors feel welcomed and valued.

Music gifts contribute through choir, worship leadership, and special music.

Encouragement gifts strengthen people through prayer, friendship, and support.

Leadership gifts help guide ministries and inspire others to serve.

Every ministry of the church is strengthened when people use the gifts God has given them.

Start a Fire

One spark can start a fire.

One person using their God-given gifts can influence a family, a ministry, a church, or a community.

The Holy Spirit does not simply call believers to attend church. The Holy Spirit empowers believers to participate in God’s mission.

When we discover our gifts and begin using them faithfully, the fire of faith spreads from one person to another.

God often changes lives through ordinary people who are willing to say yes to His calling.

Spiritual Gifts and Spiritual Fruit

Spiritual gifts and spiritual fruit are not the same thing. Spiritual gifts are abilities God gives believers for ministry and service. Spiritual fruit is the Christlike character the Holy Spirit develops in every believer. God desires both fruitful character and faithful service. Learn more on the Fruit of the Holy Spirit page.

Living the Message

Consider these questions:

What gifts has God given me?

How am I currently using those gifts?

Where do I experience the greatest joy in serving?

What ministry opportunities might God be placing before me?

How can my gifts help others grow in Christ?

What next step is God inviting me to take?
