Spiritual Gifts and How They Relate to Spiritual Disciplines

Spiritual gifts and spiritual disciplines work together to help believers grow in Christ and serve God’s kingdom. While they are different, they complement one another and are both important parts of the Christian life.
Spiritual gifts are special abilities given by the Holy Spirit to believers for the purpose of serving others and building up the church. Examples include teaching, encouragement, leadership, mercy, service, hospitality, wisdom, administration, giving, and many others. These gifts are received through God’s grace and are intended to be used for His glory.
Spiritual disciplines, on the other hand, are practices that help believers grow spiritually and deepen their relationship with God. Disciplines such as prayer, Bible study, worship, fasting, service, generosity, Sabbath rest, solitude, and Christian community help shape our hearts and strengthen our faith.
A helpful way to understand the difference is this:
Spiritual gifts are what God gives us to serve others.
Spiritual disciplines are practices we engage in to grow closer to God.
As believers mature, these two areas become closely connected. Spiritual disciplines help us develop the character, wisdom, and spiritual maturity needed to use our gifts effectively. At the same time, exercising our spiritual gifts often encourages us to practice spiritual disciplines more faithfully.
How Spiritual Disciplines Strengthen Spiritual Gifts
A person with the gift of teaching becomes a more effective teacher through Bible study, prayer, and continual learning.
Someone with the gift of mercy grows stronger through prayer, compassion, service, and spending time with people in need.
A believer with the gift of leadership benefits from prayer, wisdom, stewardship, humility, and accountability within Christian community.
Those with the gift of encouragement become more effective as they spend time in Scripture and learn to recognize God’s work in the lives of others.
Someone gifted in giving often develops through the disciplines of generosity, stewardship, gratitude, and trust in God’s provision.
Spiritual disciplines help shape the character necessary for spiritual gifts to be used in healthy and Christlike ways.
How Spiritual Gifts Strengthen Spiritual Disciplines
Spiritual gifts can also encourage the practice of spiritual disciplines.
Teachers often inspire others to study Scripture.
Prayer warriors encourage deeper prayer lives within the church.
Those gifted in hospitality create opportunities for Christian community.
Servants often lead others into ministries of compassion and outreach.
Generous believers model stewardship and giving.
Worship leaders help others engage in worship.
People with gifts of encouragement strengthen the faith of those around them.
God frequently uses spiritual gifts to help entire congregations grow in spiritual disciplines.

Growing in Both
Believers sometimes focus on one area while neglecting the other. A person may be very active in ministry but neglect prayer and Bible study. Another may spend significant time in spiritual disciplines but never use their gifts to serve others.
Healthy discipleship involves both spiritual growth and spiritual service.
Spiritual disciplines deepen our relationship with God.
Spiritual gifts help us serve God’s people.
Together they help us become mature disciples who love God, love others, and participate in God’s mission in the world.
As we grow in spiritual disciplines and faithfully use our spiritual gifts, we become more effective servants of Christ and stronger members of His church.
