Praying with Someone Who Is Dying

Offering God’s Presence, Peace, and Hope in Life’s Final Days

Few moments in life are as sacred as sitting beside someone who is nearing the end of their earthly journey.

Whether the person is a family member, close friend, fellow church member, or someone you are visiting in a hospital, hospice, or nursing home, you may wonder what to say, how to pray, or simply how to be present.

You do not need to have perfect words.

Your loving presence, your quiet prayers, and the promises of God’s Word can bring great comfort.

For believers in Jesus Christ, death is not the end of the story.

It is the beginning of eternal life in the presence of the Lord.

As we pray with someone who is dying, we entrust them to God’s faithful care and remind them of the hope that belongs to every follower of Christ.

Begin with Your Presence

Sometimes the greatest gift you can offer is simply being there.

Sit quietly.

Hold a hand if appropriate.

Listen more than you speak.

Allow moments of silence.

Your calm, caring presence often communicates God’s love more powerfully than many words.

Pray Simple, Gentle Prayers

You do not need eloquent prayers.

Simple prayers spoken from the heart are often the most meaningful.

Pray for:

God’s peace.

Freedom from fear.

Relief from pain.

Strength for each moment.

Comfort for family members.

Confidence in God’s promises.

Thank God for His lifelong faithfulness and His promise to never leave His children.

Read Scripture Aloud

Many people find great comfort in hearing familiar passages of Scripture.

Read slowly and gently.

Allow God’s Word to bring hope and reassurance.

Helpful passages include:

Psalm 23

Isaiah 41:10

John 14:1–3

Romans 8:38–39

2 Corinthians 4:16–18

Revelation 21:1–4

Even when someone can no longer respond, they may still hear your voice and be encouraged by God’s promises.

Speak Words of Hope

Remind your loved one that God is with them.

If they have placed their faith in Jesus Christ, gently reassure them of His promises.

You might say:

“God loves you.”

“Jesus is with you.”

“You are not alone.”

“We love you.”

“We will be all right.”

“Thank you for the way you have blessed our lives.”

Simple words spoken with love often bring great peace.

Pray for the Family

Family members often carry heavy emotional burdens.

Pray for:

Peace.

Strength.

Wisdom.

Unity.

Comfort.

Grace for each day.

Ask God to help them treasure these final moments together and to trust Him with what lies ahead.

Leave Nothing Unsaid

When appropriate, take time to express love, gratitude, and forgiveness.

Say:

“I love you.”

“Thank you.”

“I forgive you.”

“Please forgive me.”

These words often bring healing, peace, and comfort to everyone involved.

Trust God with the Final Moments

Only God knows the exact moment when earthly life will end.

As you pray, place your loved one into His hands.

The Good Shepherd who walked with them throughout life will also walk with them through death.

His love never fails.

His promises never change.

His eternal home is prepared for all who trust in Christ.
