Praying Through Spiritual Dryness
Seeking God When He Feels Far Away
Every Christian experiences seasons when God seems distant.
There are times when prayer feels difficult, Scripture seems less meaningful, worship feels routine, and the joy once experienced in walking with Christ seems to fade. These seasons can leave us wondering if something is wrong with our faith or whether God has withdrawn from us.
Spiritual dryness does not necessarily mean you have abandoned God.
Often, it is simply part of the journey of growing in faith.
Throughout Scripture, faithful believers experienced seasons of waiting, silence, discouragement, and spiritual struggle. David cried out to God in the Psalms. Elijah became exhausted and discouraged. Even Job wrestled with questions while remaining faithful.
The good news is that God has not abandoned you.
Even when your emotions change, His presence, His promises, and His love remain constant.

Come to God Honestly
You do not have to pretend that everything is fine.
Tell God exactly how you feel.
If you feel distant, say so.
If you feel discouraged, tell Him.
If you have questions, bring them honestly before Him.
God welcomes sincere prayers from honest hearts.
When emotions fade, God’s Word remains true.
Even if your Bible reading feels dry, continue spending time in Scripture.
Allow God’s truth—not your feelings—to shape your faith.
His Word continues to accomplish His purposes, even when you do not immediately sense its impact.
Keep Praying Faithfully
There may be days when prayer feels difficult.
Pray anyway.
Some prayers may be long.
Others may simply be, “Lord, help me.”
Faithfulness is often demonstrated by continuing to seek God, even when you do not feel emotionally encouraged.
Examine Your Heart
Ask God to search your heart.
Is there unconfessed sin?
Bitterness?
Distraction?
Pride?
Or are you simply walking through a difficult season?
Invite the Holy Spirit to reveal anything that may be hindering your fellowship with God.
Receive His forgiveness and continue walking in His grace.
Stay Connected to God’s People
Spiritual dryness often tempts us to withdraw from worship and Christian community.
Instead, remain connected.
Worship with your church family.
Study God’s Word with others.
Allow trusted believers to encourage you and pray for you.
God frequently strengthens His people through the fellowship of other Christians.
Trust God More Than Your Feelings
Feelings change.
God does not.
His promises remain true whether you feel close to Him or not.
Continue trusting His character.
Continue believing His Word.
Continue walking by faith rather than by emotion.
He is faithful even when your feelings fluctuate.
Hope in God’s Faithfulness
Spiritual dryness is usually a season, not a destination.
God often uses these times to deepen our dependence upon Him and strengthen our faith.
Continue seeking Him.
Continue trusting Him.
Continue waiting upon Him.
In His perfect time, He will renew your joy and remind you once again of His unfailing presence.
