Praying for Your Pastor
Supporting Those Who Shepherd God’s People
Pastors are called to one of the greatest privileges—and one of the greatest responsibilities—in the Christian life.
They preach God’s Word, care for people during times of joy and sorrow, provide spiritual leadership, teach the faith, encourage believers, counsel families, and faithfully point others to Jesus Christ.
While pastors have the privilege of serving God’s people, they also carry significant spiritual, emotional, and physical responsibilities.
One of the most meaningful ways a church can support its pastor is through faithful prayer.
When we pray for our pastor, we ask God to provide wisdom, strength, protection, and encouragement as they serve Christ and lead His Church.

Pray for Spiritual Strength
Pastors cannot lead others spiritually unless they are continually growing in their own relationship with Christ.
Pray that your pastor will:
Love God’s Word.
Remain faithful in prayer.
Walk closely with Jesus.
Continue growing in wisdom and spiritual maturity.
Be filled with the Holy Spirit each day.
A healthy church is strengthened by leaders whose hearts remain rooted in Christ.
Pray for Wisdom
Pastors make many important decisions.
They guide the church.
Care for people.
Teach Scripture.
Lead ministries.
Respond to unexpected challenges.
Pray that God will give your pastor wisdom, discernment, humility, and courage to lead according to His will.
Pray for Faithful Preaching and Teaching
Every sermon, Bible study, devotion, and lesson provides an opportunity to proclaim God’s truth.
Pray that your pastor will faithfully teach Scripture with clarity, compassion, and biblical integrity.
Ask God to prepare both the pastor’s heart and the congregation’s hearts to receive His Word.
Pray for Protection
Spiritual leadership often brings unique challenges.
Pray that God will protect your pastor and family from:
Discouragement.
Temptation.
Burnout.
Illness.
Spiritual attack.
Division.
Fear.
Ask God to surround them with His peace, strength, and grace.
Pray for Their Family
Behind every pastor is a family that often shares in the joys and challenges of ministry.
Pray for your pastor’s spouse, children, and loved ones.
Ask God to bless their home with love, unity, encouragement, and rest.
Pray that they will experience the joy of serving Christ together.
Pray for Joy in Ministry
Ministry includes both celebrations and burdens.
Pastors rejoice at baptisms, weddings, new believers, and answered prayers.
They also walk alongside people through illness, grief, conflict, and loss.
Pray that God will renew your pastor’s joy, strengthen their heart, and remind them that their labor in the Lord is never in vain.
Encourage as You Pray
Prayer often leads to encouragement.
A kind note.
A thoughtful conversation.
A word of appreciation.
A willingness to serve.
These simple acts remind pastors that their church family loves and supports them.
God often answers prayers through the encouragement of His people.
A Church That Prays for Its Pastor
Healthy churches pray for their leaders.
As you faithfully lift your pastor before God, you become part of the ministry God is accomplishing through your church.
Prayer strengthens both the shepherd and the flock.
Together, pastor and congregation can faithfully serve Christ and share His love with the world.
