Standing Strong in the Strength of the Lord
Every follower of Jesus faces spiritual battles. The Bible teaches that our struggle is not merely against difficult circumstances, temptation, or human opposition, but against spiritual forces that seek to distract, discourage, deceive, and defeat God’s people.
God has not left believers defenseless. Through Christ, He provides spiritual armor that helps us stand firm in faith, walk in truth, resist temptation, and remain faithful in every season.
Standing Strong in God’s Armor
What Is the Armor of God?
The Apostle Paul describes the armor of God in Ephesians 6:10-18.
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.”
— Ephesians 6:11 (NASB 1995)
Paul uses the image of a Roman soldier to help believers understand how God equips His people for spiritual battle.
The armor is not based on human strength, intelligence, or willpower.
The armor is found in Christ.
Why Do Christians Need Spiritual Armor?
Believers face spiritual challenges every day.
Temptation
Fear
Doubt
Discouragement
Deception
False teaching
Spiritual opposition
The armor of God helps Christians remain faithful, confident, and spiritually strong.
The Belt of Truth
“Having girded your loins with truth…”
— Ephesians 6:14
The belt held a soldier’s armor together. Truth holds the Christian life together.
God’s truth protects believers from deception and confusion.
Christians grow in truth by reading Scripture, learning sound doctrine, living honestly, and following Jesus faithfully.
Jesus said:
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”
— John 14:6
The Breastplate of Righteousness
“…having put on the breastplate of righteousness…”
— Ephesians 6:14
The breastplate protected a soldier’s heart and vital organs.
Spiritually, righteousness guards the believer’s heart.
Through faith in Christ, believers are declared righteous before God. As they grow in faith, they also pursue lives marked by obedience, holiness, and integrity.
The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
“…having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace.”
— Ephesians 6:15
Roman soldiers needed sturdy footwear to stand their ground.
Believers stand securely because they have peace with God through Jesus Christ.
The gospel gives confidence, stability, and readiness to share God’s love with others.
The Shield of Faith
“…taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”
— Ephesians 6:16
Faith protects believers from attacks such as fear, doubt, anxiety, discouragement, temptation, and despair.
Faith trusts God’s promises even when circumstances seem difficult.
The stronger our confidence in God, the stronger our shield becomes.
The Helmet of Salvation
“And take the helmet of salvation…”
— Ephesians 6:17
The helmet protected a soldier’s head.
Salvation protects the believer’s mind.
Christians can live with confidence because their hope rests in Jesus Christ.
The assurance of salvation helps believers resist fear and discouragement and gives them confidence for the future.
The Sword of the Spirit
“…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
— Ephesians 6:17
The sword is the only offensive weapon mentioned in the armor.
Jesus used Scripture when He faced temptation in the wilderness.
Knowing God’s Word helps believers:
Recognize truth
Resist temptation
Defeat lies
Grow spiritually
Share the gospel
The Word of God is living, active, and powerful.
Prayer: The Power Behind the Armor
Paul concludes his teaching on spiritual armor by emphasizing prayer.
“With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit…”
— Ephesians 6:18
Prayer keeps believers connected to God.
Prayer strengthens faith.
Prayer provides wisdom, guidance, and spiritual strength.
The armor of God is lived out through an ongoing relationship with Jesus.
Putting On the Armor Daily
Christians put on the armor of God by:
Reading Scripture
Praying regularly
Trusting God’s promises
Walking in obedience
Staying connected to Christian community
Relying on the Holy Spirit
Keeping their focus on Jesus
Spiritual victory comes through God’s power, not our own strength.
Common Misunderstandings About Spiritual Warfare
Spiritual warfare does not mean living in fear.
Spiritual warfare does not mean seeing demonic activity behind every difficulty.
Spiritual warfare is not about special rituals or formulas.
The focus of spiritual warfare is Jesus Christ.
Believers stand firm because Christ has already won the victory through His death and resurrection.
Living in Victory
The armor of God reminds believers that they do not fight alone.
Jesus is our Savior.
The Holy Spirit is our Helper.
God’s Word is our guide.
The Church is our community of encouragement and support.
Through Christ, believers can stand firm, remain faithful, and walk confidently through every season of life.
“Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.”
