Living as a Disciple

Following Jesus in Everyday Life

Jesus calls every believer to follow Him daily.

Living as a disciple means learning from Jesus, trusting His teaching, following His example, and allowing Him to shape every part of our lives. Discipleship is not limited to Sunday worship or Bible study. It influences how we speak, make decisions, treat others, respond to difficulties, use our gifts, serve others, and share our faith.

Every believer is on a lifelong journey of becoming more like Jesus Christ.

What Is a Disciple?

A disciple is a learner, follower, and student of Jesus.

The first disciples walked with Jesus, listened to His teaching, watched how He treated people, witnessed His compassion, and learned to participate in His mission.

Christians today continue that same journey through Scripture, prayer, worship, Christian fellowship, service, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

A disciple seeks to know Jesus more deeply, follow Him more faithfully, love others more fully, and live in a way that reflects His character.

Following Jesus Every Day

Following Jesus involves more than knowing what the Bible says. It means putting His teaching into practice.

We follow Jesus when we choose forgiveness instead of resentment, compassion instead of indifference, truth instead of dishonesty, humility instead of pride, and faith instead of fear.

Discipleship becomes visible in the ordinary moments of life—in our homes, workplaces, churches, friendships, decisions, struggles, and opportunities to serve.

We will not follow Jesus perfectly, but we can continue growing as we depend upon His grace and allow the Holy Spirit to work within us.

Growing in Faith

Spiritual growth is a lifelong process.

God uses Scripture to teach us, prayer to draw us closer to Him, worship to center our hearts, fellowship to encourage us, and service to help us put our faith into action.

As we grow, God develops Christlike character within us. He teaches us to love, forgive, serve, persevere, trust, and live with wisdom.

Growth does not always happen quickly or evenly. Some seasons bring great spiritual progress, while others require patience, endurance, and renewed trust in God.

The important thing is to continue walking with Jesus.

Becoming More Like Jesus

The goal of discipleship is not simply to know more about Jesus. It is to become more like Him.

The Holy Spirit works within believers to develop love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

This transformation affects our attitudes, priorities, relationships, words, and actions. Over time, others should be able to see the love and character of Jesus reflected through our lives.

Loving and Serving Others

Jesus taught that love for God and love for others belong together.

Discipleship leads us beyond ourselves. It teaches us to notice people who are hurting, encourage those who are discouraged, welcome those who feel forgotten, and serve wherever God provides an opportunity.

Service may happen through a church ministry, a community organization, a workplace, a neighborhood, or a simple act of kindness.

Every believer has gifts, experiences, abilities, and opportunities that God can use to bless others.

Living in Christian Community

Discipleship was never meant to be practiced alone.

God places believers within the Church so they can worship together, study Scripture, pray for one another, share their gifts, offer encouragement, and carry one another’s burdens.

Christian community gives us opportunities to learn from others, practice forgiveness, grow in patience, receive support, and participate in God’s work together.

We need one another as we follow Jesus.

Sharing Your Faith

Jesus calls His disciples to share the hope of the gospel.

Sharing our faith does not always begin with a formal presentation. It often begins with living faithfully, listening carefully, showing compassion, answering honest questions, and explaining the hope we have in Christ.

Our words and actions should work together to point others toward the love, grace, and truth of Jesus.

Following Jesus Through Difficult Seasons

Discipleship does not protect us from hardship.

Followers of Jesus may experience disappointment, grief, uncertainty, temptation, conflict, loneliness, or seasons when God seems silent.

During these times, discipleship means continuing to trust God, remain grounded in Scripture, seek prayer and support, and remember that Christ walks with us.

Difficult seasons can deepen our faith, teach us perseverance, and help us depend more completely upon God.

Take the Next Step

Every disciple has another step to take.

Your next step may be developing a regular prayer life, reading the Bible consistently, joining a study group, returning to worship, forgiving someone, serving in a ministry, using your spiritual gifts, sharing your testimony, or trusting God with an area you have been trying to control.

You do not have to understand the entire journey before taking the next faithful step.

Jesus continues to invite us:

Follow Me.
