Avoiding Harmful Influences
Guarding Your Heart While Loving Others with Wisdom
Every relationship influences us in some way. The people we spend time with, the conversations we have, the media we consume, the advice we follow, and the environments we choose all shape our thoughts, attitudes, values, and spiritual growth. Because of this, Scripture repeatedly encourages believers to exercise wisdom and discernment regarding the influences they allow into their lives.
Avoiding harmful influences does not mean withdrawing from the world or refusing to love people who believe differently. Jesus spent time with people from every background, showing compassion, extending grace, and sharing the truth. Yet He was never influenced away from His Father’s will. As His followers, we are called to engage the world without becoming conformed to it.
God calls us to guard our hearts, remain faithful to His Word, seek relationships that encourage spiritual growth, and recognize influences that may draw us away from Christ. Through the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, we can love others faithfully while protecting the spiritual health that God has entrusted to us.
“He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” — Proverbs 13:20 (NASB 1995)

Key Question
How can I love people while wisely avoiding influences that weaken my walk with Christ?
Why Influences Matter
Every influence moves us in a direction.
Healthy influences encourage us to:
Grow in faith.
Love God more deeply.
Serve others faithfully.
Develop Christian character.
Make wise decisions.
Remain faithful to God’s Word.
Unhealthy influences can gradually weaken convictions, encourage compromise, damage relationships, and distract us from God’s purposes.
What Are Harmful Influences?
Harmful influences are people, ideas, habits, environments, or activities that consistently pull us away from God’s truth.
These influences may include:
Persistent ungodly advice
Peer pressure
Manipulation
Gossip
Habitual dishonesty
Encouragement toward sinful behavior
Abusive or controlling relationships
Negative attitudes that continually discourage faith
Entertainment or media that normalizes sin
False teaching
Not every disagreement is harmful, but repeated patterns that draw us away from Christ deserve careful attention.
Loving Without Being Influenced
Followers of Christ are called to love everyone.
Jesus loved sinners.
He welcomed outsiders.
He showed compassion to the broken.
He spoke with those whom others rejected.
Yet He never compromised God’s truth or allowed others to lead Him away from His mission.
We can extend love, kindness, and respect while maintaining healthy spiritual boundaries.
Guarding Your Heart
Scripture encourages believers to guard what God has entrusted to them.
Protect your relationship with Christ.
Remain faithful to God’s Word.
Pray for wisdom.
Choose godly friendships.
Seek wise counsel.
Be honest about areas of temptation.
Establish healthy boundaries.
Fill your mind with what is true and honorable.
The strongest protection against harmful influences is a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
Choosing Wise Influences
God also provides positive influences that strengthen our faith.
Faithful Christian friends
Church family
Mature believers
Pastors and teachers
God’s Word

Serving alongside other believers
Wise influences help us continue growing in Christ.
Following the Example of Jesus
Jesus lived among people without becoming like the sinful culture around Him.
He loved without compromise.
He welcomed without approving sin.
He showed compassion without abandoning truth.
He remained faithful to the Father’s will.
His example teaches believers how to influence the world rather than be shaped by it.
