Grief and Loss

Finding Hope and Comfort Through Seasons of Grief

Overview

Grief is one of the deepest emotions we experience as human beings. It is the natural response to losing someone or something we love. Whether your loss came through the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, declining health, the loss of a dream, or another painful life change, grief touches every part of life.

Grief can affect our emotions, thoughts, relationships, physical health, and spiritual life. Some days may feel manageable, while others seem overwhelming. You may experience sadness, anger, confusion, loneliness, guilt, fear, or even moments of peace and gratitude. Every person’s journey through grief is unique.

The Bible does not tell us to ignore our grief or pretend that everything is fine. Instead, it invites us to bring our sorrow honestly before God, trusting that He understands our pain and walks beside us through every difficult season.

Jesus Himself experienced grief. He wept at the tomb of His friend Lazarus, showing that sorrow is not a sign of weak faith but a natural expression of love.

“Jesus wept.” — John 11:35 (NASB 1995)

Because Jesus conquered death through His resurrection, Christians grieve with hope. Our sorrow is real, but it is not without the promise of God’s presence and eternal life.

What Is Grief?

Grief is the emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual response to loss.

People grieve many different experiences, including:

The death of a loved one.

The loss of a marriage or close relationship.

The death of a beloved pet.

A serious illness or disability.

The loss of employment.

Financial hardship.

The loss of independence.

The loss of lifelong dreams or expectations.

Every loss is different, and every person’s experience of grief is different.

There is no “right” way to grieve.

Grief Looks Different for Everyone

Some people cry often.

Others become quiet.

Some feel numb.

Others experience anger or anxiety.

Some struggle with sleep.

Others find it difficult to concentrate.

Many people experience a mixture of emotions that change from day to day.

Grief rarely follows a straight path.

Healing often comes gradually as God continues His work in our hearts.

What Does the Bible Teach About Grief?

Scripture reminds us that grief is not something to hide.

Throughout the Bible we see faithful men and women expressing sorrow before God.

David poured out his heart in the Psalms.

Job mourned deeply after tremendous loss.

Jeremiah became known as the “weeping prophet.”

Mary and Martha wept after the death of Lazarus.

Jesus Himself wept.

God welcomes our tears.

He invites us to bring our questions, fears, disappointments, and heartache to Him in prayer.

Finding Hope in Christ

Although grief can feel overwhelming, it does not have the final word.

Because of Jesus Christ:

God is always with us.

Our loved ones who trusted Christ are safely in His presence.

Death has been defeated.

Our hope extends beyond this life.

God promises to comfort His children.

One day every tear will be wiped away.

These promises do not remove today’s pain, but they give us hope for tomorrow.

Healthy Ways to Walk Through Grief

Allow yourself to grieve honestly.

Spend time in prayer and God’s Word.

Accept help from family, friends, and your church.

Talk about your loved one and your memories.

Take care of your physical health.

Be patient with yourself.

Remember that healing takes time.

Look for opportunities to encourage others who are grieving.

Trust God one day at a time.

Heavenly Father,

Give me strength for each new day, comfort me through Your Holy Spirit, and surround me with people who will encourage me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
